Finding Inspiration Through the 100 Day Project
Wow, what a month it has been at Studio Flow!
One of the things that I am really excited about is the 100-day project. This started with a very strange (and well-timed) encounter where I was offered the opportunity to buy a very large quantity of small cradleboards.
At the time I had no idea what I could use them for, but that inner artist voice kept whispering to me “go ahead, the inspiration will hit you when you are ready.” And it certainly did!
The 100-day project
This year I wanted to join in the 100-day project as a way to almost give me accountability to do some art just for me. To find some creative time every day.
The cradleboards were perfect for this.
As you can see in the picture below, I have these boards hanging in my studio – always visible! I will look at each one and some days I will think that a certain board is complete, another day I will have a moment of inspiration and think and feel that there is something to add, another component to the story that is that particular board.
What started as a stack (ok, a very large stack) of blank canvases has grown into a journey of discovery. In a similar way to how I work in my art journal when I am out and about, these mini boards have given me a chance to play and create within the studio. With no purpose other than to explore and enjoy. To just play without thinking of the end result is such a boost for the creative soul. I love working on my 100 small paintings and I try not focus on “getting a finished product” but just add to them and go with the flow. To me that is exactly the goal of the 100 day project.
There are now boards that I feel happy with, I am now up to 60 finished board and their story is complete.
Where the creative process can take you
As I have shared my journey on Instagram and within my Facebook community I have had many wonderful comments both from people who have been inspired by them, and also people that would like to buy these smaller pieces.
What started as a simple project has developed and I am super excited to share that I will be delivering a set of these mini paintings to an exhibition next week! This is the first time ever that I will have included mini paintings in a group at an exhibition so I am equally nervous and excited to see what happens.
Getting started with Mixed Media Art
Why am I sharing all this with you?
Because I want to encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone, be bold enough to say “I want to do something for me” and find something that will help you be creative every day.
Mixed media art is a fantastic platform to explore your creativity – there are no constraints on what you must be doing, no rules to follow to ensure perfection. It is just you, your materials and listening to what comes from inside you.
I do hope that this has inspired you.
If you would like some tips and inspiration on getting started you can find some great mini videos on my YouTube Channel or join one of my classes where you can explore your creativity at your own pace.
