Connect, collaborate, create – The magic of creating art together
For many of us, our creative time is deeply personal and a time where we can be by ourselves and let the emotion and feelings flow. But then there are times when we experience creative block or we just crave the connection of working together with someone else. I like to think of it like preparing a meal, after all, how much more fun is it to prepare the family dinner when the whole family is involved? You get extra input and a unique flavour. The same is true with collaborating together in a room or even on the same art piece. If you have ever felt the gentle nudge of a creative whisper, urging you to step out of your comfort zone, or perhaps the longing to explore the magic of creating art together, this blog is for you.
Working together on mixed media art projects
Collaboration in art isn't just about working side by side; it is also about sharing experiences, challenging each other, and pushing creative boundaries. Imagine being in a room, surrounded by artists, each absorbed in their creative bubble, yet connected by a shared energy and passion. It's an experience that's as inspiring as it is uplifting.
Collaborative art is a kaleidoscope of possibilities. It might involve several artists painting on the same canvas simultaneously, each adding their spice to the piece. I have explored this way of creating both with families, companies and groups of friends. It is a really fun way of creating.
Or you can take turns, for example, one artist begins a piece, and another completes it, each adding their distinctive touch. I have done this together with artists from places all over the world where we have sent pieces to each other.
There's also the exhilarating challenge of two artists taking turns. You stop when getting stuck and when getting back to the piece you find that the collaborator have taken it in an entirely new direction. It is very inspiring, challenging and great fun.
These collaborations really give me a deep sense of connection and also serve as a powerful catalyst for my creative flow.
How I work with other artists
I love to paint and collaborate with others. To be in a room together with like-minded people all doing what we love is very inspiring and up-lifting.
In 2016, I met the incredibly talented Donna L. Martin. She was hosting my first ever workshop in the USA. We had a fantastic time, and after the workshop we could not stop and continued to paint in her studio. This was the first time we collaborated painting on the same piece of art. Since then, we have done many collaborations.
When I was in Colorado in October last year, we met up again to paint together and decided to record our endeavours. To actually collaborate on a painting together brings a magical dose of inspiration and challenge.
We had so much fun and, on reflecting on all our past collaborations, decided it would be great to share this as a class for all our students.
Flow with Friends
Flow with Friends will be a new collection of classes where I bring in Guest Artists to work together with. The goal is to give my students new fun inspiration to their art and inspire them to find various ways to connect with others to create a collaborative art piece.
If you sometimes find yourself stuck and needing a way to kick start your flow, or if you love the idea of working on something with a friend, but are not sure where to start, you will not want to miss this.
These wonderful classes will give you new inspiration and skills and the opportunity to connect, collaborate and create. The first class in this series is available now.
Flow with Friends with Donna L. Martin
In this class I collaborate with Donna on the same piece in her studio. Very interesting, challenging and great fun!
We take turns and as soon as I feel a bit stuck, I stop and swap and Donna takes over. When it’s to be my turn again, there is something added that re-ignites my flow.
Over the class we will show you how we each work and you will learn a ton of mixed media techniques.
You do not have to collaborate yourself to do the class. There are a ton of techniques shown and instruction of how we use different kinds of supplies. We will also guide you through how you can use the “transfer” to the other artist as a way to take a pause and come back a bit later to your own work, to have a fresh look at your art… maybe you will find something new - both in the painting and within you.
Whether you are working in collaboration or on your own, you will have a great time and learn new things, I am sure!
