Week 1 - Make your Book of Flow

Get excited! It’s time to explore and listen to your inner artist. You’ll watch and learn how to make a grungy art journal. By pulling together recycled materials we’ll focus on the act of making, rather than a perfect product.

I recycle scrap paper, fabric, old canvas and paint to cut, glue and stitch it all together. You’ll see how I use different types of mediums to create new effects, add detail and colour, without focusing on the outcome.

These art journaling techniques will help you uncover how to

  • let go of your inner criticism and get into the flow, and

  • find freedom to explore what feels good in the moment.

By the end of the week, you’ll have the start of your art journal, ready to build on!

Week 2 - Explore daily art journaling

Making time for creativity every day is easy once you know how. As we continue to create together, you’ll discover how art journaling can help you relax, enjoy the moment and find time for you again.

Before you know it, you’ll be making space to work on your journal every day. And you’ll see that your daily practice, doesn’t take much time or space. Watch how I journal on a plane, and find calm and peace by journaling by the sea.

By the end of week 2, you’ll be itching to take your journal with you to your favourite spots, so you can add something unique to it from a place that influences and inspires you.

Week 3 - Be inspired

This week is all about being inspired and learning from others.

I invite artists, Donna Martin and Joanna Pierre and this year I invite two BRAND NEW ARTISTS, to contribute to my Book of Flow.

Watch and learn how we co-create, building on the others’ work and using different techniques on the page.

You’re invited into the process each time, to see exactly how different people create–so you can explore new ways of playing with the materials too. There’s no right or wrong way of doing things.

By the end of week three, you’ll have a range of new ideas and techniques to use in your own art journal.

Week 4 - Let go and create mindfully

This week is about reflection and listening.

Now you have your journal together, you might be inspired to start adding to existing pages.

Become in tune with your own inner artist as you watch and listen to my process of experimentation.

Allow yourself to be open. Give yourself permission to focus on parts that inspire you, and bring you joy and peace while you’re making. This is where you’ll find confidence in expressing yourself in a way that’s unique to you.

It’s okay to add and take away as you work. You’ll know when you’re done.

By the end of week 4, you’ll have uncovered a way to express your unique voice with confidence. You’ll be bolder and braver now and have begun to find peace in letting go and finding your flow.

Are you ready?

" The course more than met my expectations. I was so happy and felt unleashed in using materials like fabrics, buttons, papers, found objects, and more. For years I didn’t know how to include it in my work and how to make it work in my art.

The more I listen to Jenny’s message and watch how she sees things in her abstractions, and just let go and play was so fulfilling to me. I just loved feeling and looking at the journal that I made out of an old magazine. I want to stay in that place where I can bring out my authenticity in my art through playing and experimenting."

I am your Creative Guide, Jenny Grant

Jenny Grant Flow Square.jpg

A perfectly imperfect, mixed media artist.

Like you, I’ve spent many years pushing aside my creative spark. Then, one day I realised the only way to awaken my inner artist was to just dive in and do it.

This means focusing on the process of making art–the making and doing. Over the years I’ve developed an intuitive, unstructured, tactile and yes, messy (but fun!) process that has allowed me to open up the magic of what is unique within me

Now, I am a Mixed Media Artist living in Stockholm, Sweden who has sold artwork, exhibited and run workshops all over the world. And I’m on a mission to inspire ordinary people like you to be brave, to use your inner creativity (yes, you are creative!) and to do more of what you love. To learn how to be more creative in life, as well as in your art.

I love sharing my magic world with you and can’t wait to see you in my Book of Flow E-course. I have seen how my creative approach has helped the creativity blossom in me and in thousands of my students. I’m so excited to share it with you to inspire you to expand your skills, and grow your creative confidence too.

Love Jenny

Love from my past students

“I just watched the class videos for, ‘Bye Bye Perfection’ and have simply fallen in love with what you teach, and how you teach. I cannot wait to start a journal page using your process/techniques. I think you have set me free! Oh.....and in the video, when you tore the edges off the journal pages I swooned! OMG I love that look SO much! Thank you!””

— Peggy

"I wanted to thank you for the beautiful atmosphere at the workshop. I felt such a belonging. I think I've never felt that kind of belonging except at home. Maybe I was at home :) And you have really an encouraging way to teach, I felt you encouraged me to do my kind of art besides giving me new ideas how to use different tools etc. Thank you so much!"

-Barbara

“What an amazing teacher Jenny is. She explains things and demonstrates how to do certain steps so eloquently. I am looking so forward to finding my inner wizard. Thank you so very much Jenny for opening up your heart and your process of creating such beautiful art.”

 Frequently Asked Questions

What art supply do I need to art journal?

You’ll get a full list of materials and supplies within the course, but you don’t need much to get started.

I believe in reusing and recycling materials and I will show you how to do the same. I’m sure you already have a lot of it at home. Some of the most common things I use are:

  • Pieces of scrap paper from old books
  • Old craft supplies (stencils, cardboard, string, scrap booking paper, etc)
  • Pieces of fabric and old canvas material
  • Acrylics paints, inks and matt mediums, gesso
  • Different brushes, sponges, a pallet knife or credit card will do
  • Pencils, pens, scissors, glue, rags
  • Needle and strong thread (you don’t need a sewing machine)

You can start with what you have, and build on it as you learn and experiment.

Do I need a sewing machine?

No, you don’t need a sewing machine at all. I’ll show you how easy it is to put together your art journal without one.

When will I have access to the videos? What is the schedule over the four weeks?

The course material will be released twice a week for 4 weeks. I run live sessions on a regular basis. I will update you in the Book of Flow Facebook Group.

How long do I have access to the course material?

I want you to be able to develop solid creative habits so you’ll have access to the materials for two years. During this time, you’ll be able to revisit the content, the materials lists and the videos as many times as you wish.

What is the purpose of an art journal?

For me, art journaling is a way for me to explore and experiment – especially when I get stuck. When I’m creating art on a canvas, I often jump back and forth between my journal and the canvas to keep my flow going. My journal is my safe space to experiment with new colours and explore new techniques and colours.

Art Journaling is an important part of my creative process, because it also allows me to relax, to let go and to find my flow. For me art journaling opens up the magic of what is unique within me.

So, when you work in your art journal, it’s a place for you to create mindfully, express yourself without any thought of the end result and to let yourself be free from rules or expectations. This practice will open up the way you create and help you move forward when you’re stuck.

What’s the difference between an art journal and a sketchbook?

For some people it's the same thing. For me personally, the main differences between an art journals and a sketchbook, are: the purpose, materials and the end goal.

An art journal brings different materials together, mixing the media to explore how they interact on the page. This opens up opportunities for new things to occur on each page. A sketchbook is about the practice of seeing and drawing–using just drawing techniques and materials.

Often the focus of a sketchbook is on perfecting your technique so that you can create a beautiful picture. This practice of focusing on the outcome can cause some people stress, so that’s why I love the mixed media art journaling process so much. It takes away expectations and need to control the outcome. It allows you freedom to explore and learn without stress of perfection.

Both journals and sketchbooks are useful and important parts of your creative processes, so you might like to explore both ways of working and see what works for you.

How do I find someone to collaborate with?

There are so many ways to collaborate with others, but if you don’t feel comfortable, that’s okay.

I’ve found it fun to work with friends, family and fellow artists. Here are some ideas for collaboration.

  • Inspired by a fellow artist or student from the Book of Flow Facebook group? Why not invite them to collaborate with you and mesh your styles together.
  • Invite someone in your family to contribute to your book exploring your family history or heritage (children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, siblings or parents).
  • Create an art journal that celebrates your favourite places (a home town or holiday destination), and invite friends or family who share that love to contribute to the book.

Got another idea? Why not share it with the group?
